About PearlPearl – The Beginning, The Heritage, The Vision
The success that Pearl Percussion Products experience today can be traced back to a heritage of dedication to quality and value for over 63 years. Founded on April 2, 1946, in a small shack in Tokyo, Katsumi Yanagisawa began a music stand manufacturing business with an ultimate goal …” to be a major manufacture of all percussion products.”
By 1960, after steady growth, the Rock & Roll revolution hit world-wide and the demand for drums explored almost overnight. Katsumi’s eldest son, Mitsuo, had already joined the company after completion of college. With a vision for the future, a 165,000 square foot factory was completed to try and fill the fast growing demand for percussion products.
In 1965, under Mitsuo’s leadership, a three-phase long range plan was created to establish the company direction.
First, upgrade manufacturing to produce the highest quality products to meet the demands of all professionals. Create a high tech Research and Development team with the ultimate goal of leading the company towards “Total percussion”.
Second, a heavy financial commitment to automated machinery in the Japan factory and an expansion program to establish additional factories in Taiwan. This investment would assure Pearl products of “Total Quality Control” in all product categories, through the development of the most sophisticated manufacturing process. In addition to this, Taiwan factories have finally developed and invested the customized automation machinery in lacquer drum manufacturing processes. There is no doubt that Mitso’s foresight that was judged well in advance in 60’s is the core of unbeatable strength at Pearl.
And third, the company would strengthen its worldwide distribution avenues through concentration on distributor, dealer and consumer service at all levels. This led to the establishment of Pearl Corporation in the United States and the parallel formation of Pearl ( UK ), Ltd., in Milton Keynes, England. Pearl is well-known for its strength of world-wide distribution capability and sales channel by maintaining solid and full-fledged individual agents throughout the world.
In the year of 2006, Pearl celebrated its 60th Anniversary and has grown to become the largest drum company in the world with 8 subsidiaries in Japan, Taiwan, China, the United States and The Netherlands. With over 650 employees working towards a common goal and the dedication of the founding Yanagisawa family, Pearl is considered the leader in product innovation, artist recognition, and quality standard throughout its drum sets, marching percussion, drum heads, orchestral percussion and Pearl Percussion product lines.
